Have you ever used a diffuser? I got my first one about 4 years ago. What in the world took me so long? My favorite places to have a diffuser are in my bedroom, in our homeschooling room and wherever I like to work on my blog or read and relax. The combinations are endless and sometimes I diffuse just one oil. During the occasional times of sickness it is a must have to promote clear airways, reduce headache tension or calm a cough. So often people are unsure of what essential oils are used for. There are 3 major ways: aromatic, topical and internal. Today I’m focusing on the aromatic use.
Aromatic use of essential oils
The sense of smell is a very powerful tool as it can stir up a memory or bring a sense of comfort like that of home baked bread. It can also wake up the senses. I love to go outside early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the day is winding down and I am feeling tired and pluck a few peppermint leaves, rub them between my fingers and breathe deeply. The pungent smell of the peppermint always clears my mind and wakes me up. The same goes for cooking Anytime I slice into a lemon I am in awe of it’s bright color and citrusy smell. A clean sent of refreshment every time. Finally, for centuries people have used lavender for it’s antiseptic, cooking and aromatic uses. There is a lavender farm in Texas which details the lavender history here.
One of the best ways to use essential oils aromatically is to diffuse them. Using a machine which heats the oils with warm water until they are evaporated into the air releasing their aromatic scent and also purifying the air or just by inhaling their scent in the palm of your hand or placing a few drops on your clothing. Often when my children had a congested cough I would add a drop or two of Eucalyptus onto their pajamas or pillow. Two additional ways that I use them aromatically are on my wool dryer balls and as a homemade cleaner.
*(The use of wool dryer balls is my absolutely favorite way to dry my clothes. Say good-bye to chemical coated dryer sheets with artificial scents. Add a few of your favorite clean scent drops of essential oil to your dryer balls ( I use 3 wool balls in my dryer) Try: lavender, grapefruit or citrus bliss)
**(Fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar to 2 parts filtered water. Add 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil such as tea tree, purify, lemon or wild orange)
